ABSTRACT
Introduction: The Moebius sequence is characterized by a congenital facial diplegia, palsy of the VI abducens nerve uni or bilateral accompanied by the involvement of other cranial nerves and limb malformations or deformations.
Objective: To report five cases with Moebius sequence in a period of three years in the Instituto Nacional de Perinatologia “Isidro Espinosa de los Reyes”, Mexico City.
Material and methods: Case 1: male patient with weak cry and complete palsy of the facial muscles, presents bilateral endotropia, poor sucking reflex, normal sensitivity, and left club foot. Case 2: male patient with bilateral facial diplegia, bilateral internal endotropia, bilateral club foot. Case 3: male patient with bilateral involvement of the abducens nerve, bilateral facial palsy and preserved sucking reflex. Case 4: male patient, bilateral facial diplegia, bilateral endotropia, poor sucking reflex, micrognathia, and bilateral club foot. Case 5: female patient with weak cry and complete palsy of the facial muscles, presents bilateral endotropia, poor sucking reflex, normal sensitivity, and left club foot.
Conclusions: Moebius sequence is a rare entity with a not yet clear etiology. There exist two theories, a genetic and a disruptive cause. We present five cases with Moebius sequence with facial diplegia and palsy of the abducens nerves. All patients presented musculoskeletal anomalies, with supports the theory of peripheral nerve involvement as well as degeneration of central brain nuclei.
