ABSTRACT
Objective: Finding out factors that determine job satisfaction among anesthesiologists in the two Petroleos Mexicanos (the Mexican State-Owned Petroleum Company) hospitals in Mexico City.
Material and methods: A descriptive, observational, cross-sectional study was carried out, based on a questionnaire answered by 22 anesthesiologists in two facilities, North and South. The questionnaire was content-validated beforehand; the reliability index was estimated at .8824.
Results: The overall satisfaction/dissatisfaction ratio among anesthesiologists was 59.16/40.5%. Regarding dissatisfaction, domain number 4 (benefits) appeared at 45.44%, and domain number 5 (working environment) appeared at 56.56%. There were no significant differences in the level of satisfaction relating to such variables as age, years of service, or category (board-certified, master’s degree).
Conclusions: Low levels of job satisfaction were found in both groups, i.e., North (50.34%) and South (69.13%), compared to figures close to 75% in such developed countries as Belgium and Canada. Factors leading to high levels of dissatisfaction were scarce company benefits, low wages, and high productivity requirements.
