ABSTRACT
Introduction: The respiratory alterations are a frequent cause of morbidity and mortality in the late premature patients.
Objective: To know the frequency, the clinical characteristics and the evolution of the RDS in late premature patients assisted in a second level hospital.
Patients and method: Retrospective, exploratory study. It included all the patients with 34 to 36.6 weeks with RDS admitted for a period of three years. Perinatal variables, clinical evolution and condition at discharge were analyzed.
Results: 182 late premature patients were admitted, which corresponds to 2.4% of the births, 48 patients had as cause of admittance respiratory difficulty. 69% were obtained by Cesarean. The most frequent diagnosis was that of TTRN, followed by RDS. In 20% surfactant was applied. Mortality was of 6%.
Conclusions: The decision to interrupt a pregnancy must consider the increase of the risk of disease or death due to respiratory failure of the late premature patient.
