Effectiveness of the simplified analysis to determine the asymmetry degree using anteroposterior radiographies, when comparing when Grummons frontal analysis

ABSTRACT
A retrospective study was undertaken in order to propose and to apply a new cephalometric method in bidimensional anteroposterior X-rays by means of quantification of the degree of craniofacial asymmetry, for the diagnosis and integral treatment of the asymmetry. Anteroposterior X-rays of 50 patients (male and female between the ages of 10 and 50) with some degree of asymmetry were plotted and measured utilizing the Simplified Analysis and Grummons frontal analysis methods. These patients received orthodontic or orthodontic-surgical attention at the “Dr. Manuel Gea González” General Hospital, Division of Estomatología-Ortodoncia during the period of 2000 up to date. Statistics revealed an age average of 20 years and 1 month, 58% female and 42% male. The frequency of hemi facial asymmetry was 50% for each side and the greater degree of asymmetry appeared mainly in the lower third of the face; indicated by the antegonial width (50%) and the antegonial height (18%) where there was a difference of 6 mm between the left and right sides. The condilion height in 18% of the cases showed a difference of 6 mm or more between the right and left sides. The difference between the length of the right and left ramus was greater than 6 mm in 30% of the cases. In addition, the lower mid line with deviation to the right (with respect to the facial mid line) had the highest frequency of cases: 28 patients (56%). In some measurements yielded by both analytical methods, the differences barely approached 1mm, which may be considered insignificant. It is therefore concluded that both cephalometric methods are effective in the diagnosis of the degree of facial asymmetry and that the diagnostic value of the Simplified Analysis method in the quantification of craniofacial asymmetry has application in the evaluation and treatment of orthodontic/surgical patients.
