ABSTRACT
The first report of percutaneous surgery was made by Rupel and Brown in 1941, by the mid- 1980´s such procedures had already proven their efficacy and gained universal acceptance. On September 1986 there was the first percutaneous nephrolithotomy at our institution by Elias Zonana Farca M.D.
Patients and Methods. We report our experience in percutaneous kidney surgery. We retrospectively evaluated the data of the last 20 years of percutaneous surgery at the department of Urology of Military Medical Center in Mexico City.
Results. We retrospectively reviewed 922 consecutive percutaneous renal access procedures performed on 700 patients form September 1986 through August 2006. There was 63% male and 37% female, with an age range of 4 to 87 years (mean 48.9 years). The number of procedure performed by patient was: one procedure in 524 patients, two procedures in 140 patients, tree procedures in 24 patients, four in 9 patients and five procedures in 2 patients. Indications for percutaneous renal access was 64% litiasis, 32% malignant ureter stricture, 2% endopyelotomy and 1% perirenal abscess. One per cent of the procedure performed was failed.
Conclusion. The percutaneous kidney surgery is and accurate, safe ad effective method. Its require to completed the learning curve by the urologist or radiologist.
