ABSTRACT
Introduction: The continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis is a domiciliary technique for the replacement treatment of kidney function; peritonitis is its main complication. Individual and familiar adherence to the practice of continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis is transcendental for a successful procedure.
Objective: To assess the individual and familiar adherence to the practice of continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis and determine the influence of some socio-demographic variables for developing peritonitis.
Methodology: Prospective, descriptive, and observational study including the total of patients who integrate the program of continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis through a shadow study and a check list of verification to assess the individual and familiar adherence during the practice of continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis. Data analysis was done with descriptive statistics and square xi.
Results: The individual and familiar adherence of the practice of continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis was considered as good in 90%. From 20 studied patients, 11 showed peritonitis. Both variables, time of having received training and socio-economic level did not have association with the presence of peritonitis. The micro-organisms frequently found in culture were both mold and fungus.
Conclusions: The teaching technique utilized by the nurse offer good learning results for patients and their family members.
