ABSTRACT
Objective. The purpose of this paper, was to know the actual situation of exclusive breastfeeding in a sample of mothers who were attended in Ambulatory Service in the Hospital Infantil del Estado de Sonora.
Material and Methods. A survey was performed to 400 mothers of childs between one and five months old about breastfeeding, and others aspects related.
Results. In our study, 77 percent of mothers do not offer exclusive breastfeeding, and some aspects of this results were similar to other publications. The birth weight and antecedents of infectious events were associated to absence of this practice.
Conclusion. Despite the HIES was certificated ten years ago, as Baby Friendly Hospital, the index of exclusive breastfeeding was very low. It is necessary to reinforce the initiatives that already exist.
