ABSTRACT
A comparative, prospective and double-blind trial was performed for evaluating the usefulness and tolerance of nifedipine 30 mg and a combined preparation consisting of 50 mg atenolol and 12.5 mg chlorthalidone in ambulatory patients with severe systemic arterial hypertension (systolic › 180 mmHg and diastolic › 110 mmHg. There was 96 patients, 47 in each group. After six weeks of treatment the results of the study showed decreases of both, the systolic levels to 140 mmHg and diastolic levels to 90 mmHg of blood pressure, in sixty-four percent of patients in each group. The side effects were minimal. There was no mortality.
