ABSTRACT
In 1967, Northway
et ál, published the "classical" description of the bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD). Changes occurred to this entity in the last four decades motivated the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute to define updated criteria of the "new" BPD. Emphasis was put in prematurely born before 32 gestational weeks, since normal alveolar and vascular development is interrupted, and in the early therapeutic use of supplementary oxygen, which joined to the metabolic immaturity, favors the production of reactive oxygen species that provoke pulmonary damage in the "new" BPD. Owing to continuing advances in technology and research, survival of extremely premature babies (‹ 1,000 g) is increasing, which leads to a higher number of children with chronic sequelae of BPD. Therefore, the objective of the present work was to present a review of the current knowledge of physiopathogenic and therapeutic changes occurred in this disease.
