ABSTRACT
For centuries, hemorroidal disease has been one of the most frequent in human beings. It is difficult to have an exact idea of its prevalence, but we are sure than in Mexico, at least 5% of the general population suffers symptoms related to hemorroids. In this review, advances in knowledge of hemorroidal disease are described. It includes definition, classification, symptomatology, diagnosis, differential diagnosis, medical treatment, alternative non-surgical methods, different types of hemorroidectomy, posoperative complications and management. Finally, special circumstances associated with this disease are described, such as pregnancy, HIV+ or AIDS patients, portal hypertension, inflammatory intestinal disease, leukemia, lymphoma, bariatric surgery and fissure and anal fistula.
