Cardiovascular risk factors detection in a rural population of the state of Michoacan, Mexico

ABSTRACT
Background: Cardiovascular diseases are the number one cause of death in the world and in Mexico. Traditionally these illnesses have been related with lifestyle characteristic of the urban communities where the exaggerated consumption of saturated fats, the lack of physical activity and the emotional tension are common. However, we ignore the prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors in rural populations of our country, where we suppose that this type of problems is not so frequent.Objective: To determine the prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors in a rural population of the state of Michoacan, Mexico.
Material and method: This is an observational, prospective, cohorts study in a sample of the population of Santa Ana Maya, Michoacan. We registered: age, sex, antecedents of premature cardiovascular diseases, smoking, arterial pressure, body mass index, waist perimeter, fasting glycaemia and lipid profile.
Results: The prevalence of overweight, smoking, hypertension, diabetes, dyslipidemias and metabolic syndrome in the studied rural population are superior to the national stocking reported by the national surveys.
Conclusions: The high prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors in the rural population of the state of Michoacan leads to consider the elements that have influenced in this alarming epidemic metamorphosis to be able to prevent and to treat the metabolic and cardiovascular illnesses associated to this factors of risk appropriately.
