Incidence of adenomatous colonic polyps in a population of asymptomatic people in a checkup unit at the Medica Sur Hospital

ABSTRACT
Background and aim: Colonic polyps are a separated mass like solid tumors in the lumen. The aim of the study is to detect the incidence and the hystopathological characteristics of colonic polyps in a healthy population attending to a check up unit of a university hospital in Mexico City.
Patients and methods: We study 2,160 subjects attending to a check up unit up unit of a university hospital in Mexico City between January 2003 and December 2004. Rigid rectosigmoidoscopy was made to all subjects. Biopsy was made to all subjects with colonic polyps for hystopatological study.
Results: Colonic polyps where diagnosed in 108 (5%) of the total studied population, Male gender was more affected than female (76.8% vs 23.2%). Adenocarcinoma was diagnosed with hystopatological study in 47 (43%) of subjects.
Conclusion: There is a high prevalence of colonic polyps in the studied population being adenocarcinoma polyps the most prevalent.
