ABSTRACT
Background: Moschowitz proposed that rectal prolapse was a sliding hernia of the anterior wall of the rectum through a defect of the pelvic fascia. In 1969, Frykman and Goldberg published their technique that was exactly equal to the abdominal phase of Milles’s operation.
Methods: The files of patients operated on for rectal prolapse from January 1995 to December 2004 in the Service of Colon and Rectal Surgery of the Specialty Hospital, Centro Médico Nacional Siglo XXI were reviewed.
Results: There were 55 patients with diagnosis of rectal prolapse. Sixteen patients (29.09%) underwent Frykman-Goldberg procedure, 14 females and 2 males. Average age was 54.04 years, average surgical time was 193.2 min, and average blood loss was 250 ml. There were complications in only two patients (12.5%).
Conclusions: In our service, in those patients in whom there were contraindications for abdominal surgery, we used helicoidal suture as a surgical alternative. We considered that it is a safe and physiological method for the treatment of rectal prolapse. The number of patients may be low, but the obtained results are encouraging so as to have clear and conclusive ideas.
