ABSTRACT
Purpose: To determine if there is correlation between best corrected visual acuity and macular thickness in eyes with proliferative diabetic retinopathy and concomitant clinically significant macular edema, before and after macular and scatter laser treatment. In addition, to determine if intravitreal triamcinolone modifies that correlation.
Methods: Best corrected visual acuity and macular thickness (using optic coherence tomography) were measured in both eyes of patients with diabetic retinopathy and concomitant macular edema before and after macular and scatter laser treatment. In one eye of each patient intravitreal triamcinolone was injected before the laser treatment. Best corrected visual acuity and macular thickness were measured 3 months latter.
Results: No correlation was found between the variables before or after the laser treatment.
Conclusions: There is no correlation between macular thickness and best corrected visual acuity. The degree of the retinopathy and the time in which the macular edema has been present could be implicated in this lack of correlation. Intravitreal triamcinolone did not modify the correlation. It would be important to study other parameters of macular and retinal function to assess other effects of the intravitreal steroids and laser treatment in eyes with proliferative diabetic retinopathy and concomitant clinically significant macular edema.
