ABSTRACT
Purpose: To determine the best corrected visual acuity in patients who underwent torn posterior capsule or zonulolysis, with or without vitreous loss, during phacoemulsification surgery performed by residents.
Methods: Retrospective, observational, transversal study. Charts of patients with adult cataract diagnosis, without ocular comorbidity or ocular surgery antecedents were included. Congenital or traumatic cataract diagnosis were excluded and charts with less than one month postoperative follow up were eliminated.
Results: Two hundred thirty nine torn posterior capsules and zonulolysis cases were identified among 4342 phacoemulsification surgeries performed (incidence 5.5%). Thirty five charts were eliminated. A torn posterior capsule
occurred in 171 eyes (83.8%) and zonulolysis in 33 (16.2%). Ninety five percent of cases received an intraocular lens
implantation. In 80.8% of patients, best corrected visual acuity was 20/60 or better, of which, 73.5% was 20/40 or better and 47.5%, 20/25 or better.
Conclusion: Successful intraocular lens implantation and visual rehabilitation is possible when torn posterior capsule and zonulolysis are identified and supported.
