ABSTRACT
Objective: We compared glucose level and Body mass index (BMI) between patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2) who attended and did not attend mutual aid groups.
Materials and Methods: We conducted an observational,
transversal, and comparative study between September and December 2004, and interviewed a total of 22 persons with
DM2 who belonged to mutual aid groups at the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS) No. 94 Family Medicine
Unit in Mexico City. For every patient in this group, four individuals were admitted with the same characteristics (for a total of 88 persons) who did not belong to a mutual aid group. The last three glucose readings were averaged, and BMI was determined. We utilized the Mann-Whitney
U test to identify differences between groups
Results: The study sample comprised 100 persons with DM2. Average age of patients in the mutual aid group was 68.7 years, average glucose reading was 169.39 mg/dl, and average BMI was 28.71, while in the group not attending mutual aid meetings average age was 62.3 years, average glucose reading was 162.50 mg/dl, and average BMI was 28.36.
Conclusions: No statistically significant differences were found in glycemic levels and BMI between patients in the mutual aid group and those not belonging to a group.
