ABSTRACT
Background. A zone in open-globe trauma is identified by the most posterior located boundary of the ocular wall defect, because of its surgical implications, but without considering intraocular injuries. The probability of presenting posterior segment involvement was estimated in open-globe trauma.
Method. Ratios and 95% confidence intervals were identified for posterior segment involvement and affected zone in patients with open-globe trauma at a general hospital from 2000 to 2006. Patients with previous intraocular surgery were excluded. The probability of posterior segment involvement was estimated in each zone.
Results. 149 eyes (mean age 20.2) were evaluated; zone III was involved in 27 eyes (18.1%), 32 had posterior segment involvement (21.5%, I.C.95% 14.9-28.1). The probability of presenting posterior segment involvement was 8% for zone I (I.C.95% 1.9-14.1), 29.8% for zone II (I.C.95% 16.7-42.9) and 44.4% for zone III (I.C.95% 26 -62.8%).
Discussion. Posterior segment involvement in eyes with zone III was ›50%. Confidence intervals show that zone II could be affected as much or more than zone III.
Conclusion: Evaluation of the posterior segment in open-globe trauma is as important for zone II as for zone III.
