ABSTRACT
Background: Choroidal fundus has been associated to a lower prevalence of diabetic retinopathy, possibly due to a thin retinal pigment epithelium. It is unknown if the retina is thinner in this cases, as in progressive myopia. The purpose of this study was to identify if in diabetic patients with coroidal fundus the retinal thickness was at least 10% or less.
Methods: Diabetics without retinopathy and with spherical equivalent +/- 4.00 diopters were evaluated by optical coherence tomography and assigned to group 1 (with choroidal fundus) or 2 (without choroidal fundus). Means of retinal thickness in each field, foveal central thickness and macular volume were compared (independent means t test).
Results: 63 eyes from group 1 (75.9%) and 20 from group 2 (24.1%). There were not statistical differences: field 1 187.4±19.7µm (group 1) vs. 188.7±11.9 µm (group 2), foveal central thickness 156.4±17.7µm vs. 157.6±14.9 µm, macular volume 6.9±0.44mm
3 vs. 6.89±0.41 mm
3 (p =0.7).
Conclusions: Retinal thickness in diabetics with choroidal fundus was 1-2% thinner than in patients without it, difference that can be found in the same group, rendering insufficient to consider that the retina is thinner. The mechanism attributed to choroidal fundus is thinning of the retinal pigment epithelium, which is not measured by OCT and should be evaluated with other techniques.
