ABSTRACT
Caudal analgesia is a safe and easy anesthetic procedure suggested for children under going lower abdominal procedures with duration less than 90 minutes. To optimize the quality of caudal anesthesia, different drugs have been used with the local anesthetics such as epinephrine, ketamine, opioids and adrenergic alpha agonists (clonidine). Clonidine is an adrenergic agonist that reduces anesthetic requeriments and inhibits adrenal symphatic flow, it produces adrenergic and cardiovascular stability. It mediates anesthesia, antinociception, bradycardia, hypotensionanddecreases salivation; it is also capable of blocking painfull impulses transmission. There have been clinical trials which study clonidine as agent in caudal blockade in pediatric patients by comparing duration of analgesia with other drugs, these trials conclude that clonidine associated to a local anesthetic in caudal blockade, decreases supplementary analgesic requirements and it is not related to collateral efects.
