ABSTRACT
The neurological pathology in the pregnant patients is not very common, but it is of high mortality. The mortality in the pregnant woman in Mexico is higher than in other developing countries.
Material and methods: In a descriptive study, the neurological pathologies were investigated in pregnant patients entered in the Unit of Intensive Cares of the Perinatal Hospital «Josefa Ortiz de Domínguez» in Toluca Mexico, from October 2005 to September 2006. We evaluate the effectiveness of a rescue program for serious neurological dysfunction in complicated pregnancy (PREDINEC) about the maternal mortality, which consists on integral and opportune support to the complicated pregnant patient.
Results: Of the total of patients, 82 (4.7%) were obstetric patients; of them 16 (19.5%) presented neurological pathology, 10 (62%) cases were of cerebral vascular disease, 5 (31%) of hypertensive encephalopathy and a case of neuroinfection. The average age was of 25 (16-38) years; there was not relationship with the parity neither another external factor. A single case (6%) was mortal. The Glasgow Outcome was of 1 and 2 in 81% of the cases.
Discussion: The found pathologies are different to the previous reports, calling the attention the absence of cerebral infarcts. The morbility is low and the mortality is inferior to the international reports.
Conclusions: Although it is not a comparative study and our muestral size is small, we determine an inferior mortality to our previous reports and the international ones (40-70%). This can be attributed to the PREDINEC program although more controlled studies are required.
