ABSTRACT
Magnesium (Mg) is a mineral related to energetic metabolism. This study describes season oscillations of Mg levels, and other minerals in different productive phases in dairy cows from a subtropical area with low quality pasture in extended lands. Low serum Mg concentrations were detected specially in August and September, which are the months of less milk production. Seven animals were supplied with 20 g/day/cow of magnesium oxide for 77 days (spring-summer). The biochemistry assay and the productive test were performed in the treated group animals, and seven untreated cows were used as the control group, from July 1995 to May 1996 in the northeast of Entre Rios (540 km north from Buenos Aires, Argentina). Using the multivariate analysis (MANOVA), a significant season effect for Mg (P ‹ 0.001) was found, as well as an important treatment-effect (P ‹ 0.05). The remarkable variation in levels of calcium and phosphorous was the month-effect, probably associated to nutrition- and production requirements. The relation between minerals and different phases of milk production and supplementation are discussed in this study.
