ABSTRACT
Roselle seed contains around 20% protein and 18% fat; for this reason it is both a source of protein and energy. An experiment was conducted to study the roselle seed effect on broiler performance, function and histopathology in liver. A randomized design was used; experimental treatments were roselle seed inclusion (0, 10, 20 and 30%) in sorghum+soybean meal diets. Each diet was fed by triplicate to 20 broiler chicks groups from on to 49 days of age. Results for weight gain (2485, 2408, 2543 and 2406 g) and feed consumption (4765, 4662, 4653 and 5088 g) were similar among treatments (P› 0.05). Feed conversion was better (1.92, 1.93, 1.83 and 2.09) for 0, 10 and 20%, respectively in comparison with 30% of roselle seed. Data for aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase(AST), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), total lipids and total proteins were not different among treatments. Histopathology demonstrated no damage in the liver due to the roselle seed in the diet. This data indicates that roselle seed can be included in levels up to 30% in sorghum+soybean diets without effect on weight gain nor in the function of the liver.
