ABSTRACT
Objective. To delineate an updated approach for the execution of mental examination in clinical practice, as well as to review classic and novel aspects of the main used techniques to evaluate the cognitive functions. Development. First several features for the execution of mental examination in clinical practice are described: to notice pertinent objective findings, to use quantifications appropriately, to avoid inferences and direct relations, to observe how the behavior is executed, and to select the techniques according to the raised hypotheses. The temporary, environmental and referring circumstances to the patient that are due to anticipate to carry out the specific examination are described. Soon the main techniques that allow to evaluate the conscience are reviewed, direction, attention, memory, information and vocabulary, calculation, abstraction and visuoespacial ability. Subdivisions and dimensions to evaluate each category are reasoned in special form. In addition, it is stimulated the systematic, flexible and ordered application of a brief, but consistent and efficient exploration, to detect alterations of the mental functions.
Conclusions. The main clinical techniques that are recommended at the moment to evaluate most of the cognitive functions are detailed and an approach for its actually medical execution is presented. Implicitly, the priority that has the continuous and detailed improvement of the techniques is emphasized to examine the mental state.
