ABSTRACT

Introduction. The concept of negative symptoms in schizophrenia is derived from Kraepelin’s description an reintroduced in 1974 by Strauss, Carpenter and Bartko and separated into three specific symptoms complexes: Positive symptoms (PS), negative symptoms (NS) and disorders of relating. Four symptoms have consistently loaded on the Negative symptom Factor: Affective flattening, Alogia, Avolition and Anhedonia.
Method. In this investigation we studied Positive and Negative symptoms through PANSS rating scale in three groups of 90 patients each: Paranoid schizophrenics, Non Paranoid Schizophrenics and Organic Psychosis included Schizophrenic like-psychosis.
Results. There are significant statistical differences between Schizophrenic and Non- Schizophrenic patients in Positive Symptoms and there are not significant differences in Negative symptoms.
Conclusions. There exist a strong relationship of NS with time of evolution, neuroleptic treatment with depot presentations and ECT, poor therapeutic adherence and poor environment in both groups.
