ABSTRACT
Introduction. It has been described that primary open-angle glaucoma is detected more frequently in diabetic and hypertensive patients, because of their referral for ophthalmic evaluation. Its general prevalence in Latinos is 4.74%; the prevalence in patients aged 40 or older, without a history of overweight, diabetes or hypertension was identified.
Methods. Intraocular pressure (IOP) and cup/disk ratio were measured in patients without a history of overweight, diabetes or arterial hypertension. Whenever abnormal cup/disk ratios were found, retinal nerve fiber analysis by optical coherence tomography and central perimetry for glaucoma detection were performed. Glaucoma prevalence was analyzed by percentages, 95% confidence intervals (CI) and z for rates.
Results. 71 patients aged 41-77 were evaluated; their body mass index had a 16.2-25.1 interval, systolic pressure a 90-130 mm Hg interval and diastolic pressure a 60-89 interval. Mean IOP was 15.1 in the right eye and 15 in the left; mean cup/disk ratio was 0.4. Glaucoma prevalence found was 42.3% (95% CI 30.8-53.8, p ‹ 0.001).
Discussion. Glaucoma prevalence in the studied group was higher than that reported in general population. This finding reveals an area of opportunity for blindness prevention, in a group that is not usually referred to the Ophthalmologist.
