ABSTRACT
The metabolic disturbances as hyperglycemia are frequent in the critically ill patient. This alteration is consequence of the immunometabolic imbalance and insulin resistance that occurs during local and systemic inflammatory response. Hyperglycemia increases morbidity and mortality in patients admitted to intensive care unit with diagnosis of sepsis, stroke, burns, ischemic disease and trauma. The tight control of glucose serum levels is important in the critical care setting, and is related to better outcome, thus it must be considered in protocols of management at the intensive care unit.
