ABSTRACT
The fatty acids have an important biological role, mainly in the cardiac function and metabolism. It has been verified that they avoid arrhythmias and some dislipidaemias and even they prevent sudden death. The possible beneficial effects of these acids were considered initially from population observations in specific groups like the Eskimos. Omega 3 fatty acid concentration, derived from fish or vegetables oils (linoleic) is one of the independent factors related to a smaller incidence of cardiac ischemic disease. For such reason, it was suggested that these substances could prevent the sudden death with a simple dietetic intervention. Apparently, omega 3 fatty acids are excellent antiarrhythmic by their action on different mechanisms that generate arrhythmias. Besides, they have an acceptable tolerance profile and their collateral effects are limited. In summary, omega-3 fatty acids have an antiarrhythmic potential determined by their electrophysiological effects.
