Ácidos grasos y muerte súbita

RESUMEN
Los ácidos grasos tienen un papel biológico importante, sobre todo en la función y el metabolismo cardiacos. Desde el punto de vista terapéutico, se ha comprobado que evitan arritmias y algunas dislipidemias, incluso intervienen tanto en la génesis de la muerte súbita como en su prevención. Los posibles efectos benéficos de estos ácidos se plantearon inicialmente a partir de observaciones poblacionales en grupos específicos como los esquimales. Uno de los factores independientes relacionados con una menor incidencia de enfermedad isquémica cardiaca fue justamente la concentración de ácidos grasos omega 3 (Ω-3), derivados de aceites de pescado o vegetales (linoleico). Por tal razón se sugirió que estas sustancias podrían prevenir la muerte súbita con una intervención dietética sencilla. Aparentemente, los ácidos grasos omega 3 son excelentes antiarrítmicos por su acción sobre diferentes mecanismos de generación de arritmias, tienen un perfil de tolerancia aceptable, y sus efectos colaterales son limitados. En resumen, los ácidos grasos omega-3 tienen un potencial antiarrítmico determinado por sus efectos electrofisiológicos.
