RESUMEN

El tratamiento de la hepatitis crónica depende de su origen, aunque sigue los principios comunes de manejo de la hepatitis en general. Los individuos con este padecimiento pueden llevar una vida normal y practicar deporte, ya que no requieren reposo; sin embargo, el consumo de alcohol, aun en mínimas cantidades, favorece la progresión de la enfermedad, por lo que hay que evitarlo. El manejo de la hepatitis crónica causada por el virus B debe dirigirse a inhibir su multiplicación durante el mayor tiempo posible. En la actualidad existen tres agentes orales y un interferón aprobados para el tratamiento de la hepatitis B. En los pacientes con hepatitis crónica por virus C, antes de comenzar cualquier esquema, hay que realizar una prueba de selección para descartar otras infecciones hepáticas crónicas. La finalidad del tratamiento es erradicar el virus, y por consiguiente, la curación de la enfermedad. Las indicaciones todavía son tema de debate en foros nacionales e internacionales.
