ABSTRACT
The bispectral index, a non invasive procedure of recent introduction, has been used and applied in the operating room and the intensive care unit in patients with sedation, barbiturate coma, status epilepticus, hypoglycemia, hypothermia, low cerebral flow, assisted mechanical ventilation and in patients undergoing to non invasive procedures at the bedside. This technique is a useful tool to reduce the events of patient’s agitation, the involuntary/accidental retirement of medical devices; it offers security in the sedation degree allowing the adaptation of type and quantity of drugs to be used and the reduction of costs also. The equipment is small and easy to handling.
