ABSTRACT
The objetive of this study was to evaluate the genetic trends for 305 days milk production and the selection according to the sex. Four thousand four hundred and eigthy (4480) first lactation, half sister records reported in 138 herds of the Mexican Holstein Association, were studied. Data was analyzed with the fixed effect model including zone, herd: zone, month and calving year and zone; year interaction. All effects were significant (P ‹ .01), except the zone's one. A correction to this effect was made. Fenotipic and genetic trends were calculated (72 and 66 kg for milk, respectively). The retrospective selection index indicated that 16% of this increase was attributed to the sires and 84% of it to the cows. This indicates that there is a possibility to apply the selection on the sires and obtain a production increase.
