ABSTRACT
In recent years the interest of natural extracts as an alternative for microbial pathogens control has been increased. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the microbicidal activity of acetonic, ethanolic and metanolic seed extracts obtained from
Azadirachta indica A. Juss (neem) and
Swietenia humilis Zucc (venadillo) trees. Concentrations of natural extracts at 1, 10, 25 and 50% were separately confronted against
Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and the P22 bacteriophage at two contact times (2.5 and 5 min) periods. The initial and final concentrations of both bacterial and viral indicators were expressed in Log
10 CFU and PFU per mL, respectively. The ethanolic neem extract at 10% inhibited the
E. coli growth, while the methanolic and acetonic extracts did it at the 25% and 50% extract concentration. The venadillo ethanolic extract at 50% eliminates
E. coli while acetonic and methanolic extracts only reduced 6 Log
10 CFU/mL. Venadillo extracts at 50% were also able to reduce
S. aureus growth, while the neem extracts did not. The ethanolic extract at 50% showed at 4 Log
10 PFU/mL phage reduction, while the venadillo extracts did not. In summary, the ethanolic extracts, at 50%, from both neem and venadillo proved to be at natural choice for the microbial control.
