ABSTRACT
The infection of the CNS by Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV) has been recognized like commonest cause of fatal isolated encephalitis in adults and greater children of six months. Primary oropharingeal infection by VHS-1 causes invasion of axons and axoplasmic transport of the virus towards the sensorial ganglion of the trigeminal, where it establishes its latency. It is of great importance the early diagnosis in HSE because the antiviral treatment diminishes the morbidity and mortality. The accepted handling in adults and greater children of three months of age with HSE is with aciclovir 10 mg/kg every eight hours during 14 to 21 days.
