Diagnóstico y tratamiento de la encefalitis por herpes simple. Conceptos actuales

RESUMEN
La infección del SNC por el virus de herpes simple (VHS) ha sido reconocida comúnmente como causa de encefalitis esporádica fatal en adultos y niños mayores de seis meses. Primordialmente la infección orofaríngea por VHS-1 causa invasión de axones y transporte axoplásmico del virus hacia el ganglio sensorial del trigémino, donde establece su latencia. Es de gran importancia el diagnóstico oportuno de EHS, ya que el tratamiento antiviral disminuye la morbilidad y mortalidad. El manejo aceptado en adultos y niños mayores de tres meses de edad con EHS es aciclovir 10 mg/kg cada ocho horas durante 14 a 21 días.
