ABSTRACT
This study was performed to evaluate efficacy and safety of epidural use of nalbuphine
SP in obstetric analgesia.
Material and method: 28 obstetric patients in labor who had
epidural catheter were randomly assigned to two groups: Group N: who received 12 mL of
0.9% saline solution and 100 mg/kg of nalbuphine SP; and group B: who received 12 mL
of Bupivacaine 0.125% in 0.9% saline solution. Age, gestation weeks, number of
previous epidural blocks, time to parturition and VAS score at the moment of
solution administration, and at 5, 15, 30, 60 and 90 minutes, motor blockade,
and side effects. Data was collected and analyzed with t Student test, p < 0.05
was considered significant.
Results: VAS store were similar in both groups, but
not when compared with the initial scores. The scores in VAS were: at the time
of epidural administration: Group N: 8.7 ± 1.3 and in group B: 8.6 ± 1.5 (p > 0.05);
at 5 min: group N: 5.07 ± 3.1 and in group B: 5.14 ± 2.5 (p> 0.05); at 15 min: group
N: 3.7 ± 2.5 and in group B: 4.5 ± 2.3 (p > 0.05); at 30 min: group N: 2.8 ± 2.5 and
in group B: 3.2 ± 2.8 (p > 0.05); at 60 min: group N: 32.5 ± 2 and in group B: 1.9 ±
2.6 (p > 0.05); at 90 min: group N: 2.5 ± 2.3 and in group B: 1.4 ± 1.9 (p > 0.05).
No side effects were found in either of the groups. Conclusion: This study demonstrates
the effectiveness of epidural nalbuphine in labor analgesia, as well as the safety of
its use.
