ABSTRACT
We present the case of a five year-old girl with submucous cleft palate (SCP). The family had been informed that a bifid uvula is a normal, harmless condition. However because her voice was abnormal the patient had been given phoniatric therapy for two years with no improvement. We believe it is important for physicians to detect SCP indicators since this congenital malformation causes suction problems, inadequate palatal movement and velopharyngeal incompetence, as well as speech and auditive problems, all of which require specialized management.
