ABSTRACT
Background: At present, organ transplantation has proven its efficacy for treatment in patients with end-stage organ disease. However, there remain some barriers that render the entire process difficult. Here we describe the main results of an attitude survey administered to health care personnel and the public (patients and their relatives) with regard to the organ transplantation process. Objective: Our objective was to measure subjectively the attitude of the population (health care workers and patients and their relatives) at the Hospital Angeles del Pedregal in Mexico City regarding the organ donation process. Material and methods: We conducted an observational, prospective, open, descriptive study of parallel groups by direct application of a non-validated and unpublished test from the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS), National Transplant Foundation (FUNAT), and National Center of Transplants (CENATRA) and included changes made by our investigation group. Two hundred tests were applied to two populations at the Hospital Angeles del Pedregal. Results: Survey information was divided into four categories with regard to content data as follows: I. Knowledge of the problem; II. attitudes toward the organ donation process; III. personal actions taken, and IV. expectations regarding the entire process. Results are expressed in Tables. No statistic significance was obtained. Conclusions: Results suggest that organ transplantation is not accepted in general by the two populations; the process itself is influenced by certain cultural and legal factors and diffusion by the media. Additional studies are need ed to measure attitudes toward the entire process. Validation of the attitude survey may become a valuable source of information for detecting opportunities in this field. ed to measure attitudes toward the entire process.
