ABSTRACT
Introduction: A marker of quality is the quantity of resources used to solve the burden of illness. Nine Equivalents of nursing Manpower use Score (NEMS) measures the use of resources in UCI, while APACHE II scoring the severity of illness.
Objective: To determine the correlation between the use of resources and the severity of illness. To determine if the activities of nursing are related with the indicator nurse:patient in the ICU according to the formulas of work utilization ratio (WUR), planned level of care (LOC) and operative level of care.
Methods and subjects: Cohort of two years in a mixed ICU. Variables: Demographic, APACHE II and NEMS. Statistical analysis: Pearson’s correlation.
Results: There were 751 patients. There were 396 men (52.7%). Mean age was 52.7 ± 19.2 years. Mean APACHE II was 11.5 ± 6.9 and mean NEMS was 230 ± 280. WUR was 1.64, the planned LOC was 0.66 and the operative LOC was 0.58. Correlation coefficient between NEMS and APACHE II was 29.7 (p ‹ 0.01).
Conclusions: There is a bad correlation between the severity of illness and the use of resources. However, there is an adequate relationship nurse:patient.
