ABSTRACT
Objective: To report an outbreak of tuberculosis (TB) among health care workers in a general hospital and the steps taken to control it.
Methods: Investigation of a TB nosocomial outbreak and implementation of a control strategy.
Results: Between 4 November 2005 and 23 June 2006, seventeen cases of pulmonary TB were diagnosed among health care workers of the Tijuana General Hospital. In response to the outbreak, an assessment of the risk of acquiring
M. tuberculosis infection was the first step of a plan aimed at improving TB infection control in the hospital, followed by an emergency room triage system for management of patients with clinical suspicion of TB at admission. An isolation ward was arranged in the Emergency Department to separate the cases with suspicion of TB from the rest of the patients while waiting for the sputum smears results.
Conclusions: Adequate personal, engineering and administrative measures are needed for adequate control of this occupational hazard in all health care facilities managing large numbers of TB patients.
