ABSTRACT
Nocturnal enuresis is not a nosological entity but a clinical sign present in an heterogeneous group of diseases. It constitutes a health problem of wide distribution, because it is present in all civilizations and geographic areas, it affects all ethnic groups and social stratums with some preponderance for the less economically suited stratums. At five years of age it affects 15% of children of both genders with a predominance of 3:1 in males and with slightly predominance in left-handeness. In United States is calculated that from 5 to 7 millions of children suffer from primary nocturnal enuresis. In Mexico there are no exact statistics but taking into account the information given by the 2000 XII population’s census directed by The National Institute for Statistics, Geography and Informatics there are in Mexico 2 million 886 thousand five years old children from those 15% or 337,633 suffer form enuresis and considering the total population of children between 5 to 16 years old (26 millions, 31 mil 931), its is quite possible that in our country there could be around 4 to 5 millions of children and youngsters suffering from this medical problem which not only affects the patient’s health both physically and emotionally but also affects his own family and the society around him.
