ABSTRACT
A series of 121 pediatric patients with displaced Gartland type III supracondylar fractures recorded from January 1st to May 31st, 1996, selecting 46 assorted patients in whom a clinical-neurological evaluation and electromyography of the affected side was performed 21 days after surgery. There were 30 patients aged 6.4 ± 2.6 years old. There were 17 patients with affection of only one nerve (11 ulnar, 4 radial and 2 of the median nerve). Twelve patients had injured nerves; ulnar nerve was associated to median nerve injury in 10 cases and with radial in 2. Only one patient had affection of 3 nerves; 28 patients were treated by closed reduction and 18 with open reduction. Twenty-six had posteromedial displacement.
It is concluded that only 21% of the patients had neuroclinical symptoms and 65.2% of the electromyography reports were neuropraxia and neurotmesis. We found higher incidence of neural complications compared to other papers.
