ABSTRACT
The objective was to evaluate the genetic and environmental factors on milk yield (MY) and reproductive traits of 1/2 Holstein × 1/2 Zebu (HZ), 1/2 Brown Swiss(S) × 1/2 Z (SZ), and ¾ S × 1/4 Z (3S1Z) crossbred cows. Lactation records (n = 90) of 30 crossbreed cows, 10 of each racial group in three commercial dual-purpose farms of Veracruz, Mexico, were used. Total milk yield per cow per day (TMY), daily MY (DMY), calving interval MY (CIMY), peak milk yield (PMY), days to peak milk yield (DPMY), and lactation length
(DL), were analyzed. The obtained results showed that the racial group did not infl uenced (P › 0.05) on any studied productive characteristics. Reproductive characteristics including age at fi rst calving (AFC), days open (DO), calving interval (CI), were analyzed using survival analysis procedures. Results of the survival analyses showed F1 cows had better (P ‹ 0.01) reproductive performance than 3S1C cows, with earlier AFC, both shorter DO and CI and earlier JCD. In conclusion, crossbred cows HZ, SZ, and 3S1Z grazing tropical forages supplemented with 18% CP concentrates had similar performance in DMY, MYL, PMY, DPMY, and DL. Holstein × Zebu crossbreed cows showed higher reproductive ability than cows with Swiss genes. Results from this study suggest
HZ crossbred cows as the most appropriate to produce milk in the tropical conditions of northern Veracruz.
