Pilot study of a virtual simulation model to teach the lumbar sympathetic block procedure

ABSTRACT
Objective: To evaluate the usefulness of virtual simulation to teach the lumbar sympathetic block procedure.
Method: A longitudinal prospective pilot study was conducted with seven pain management residents. A virtual simulator for medical training was used. Participants were trained about the lumbar sympathetic block procedure in two fifteen-minute sessions; each participant performed individually up to six times the procedure in random days. The time elapsed to complete the procedure, to use the virtual simulator and to use the fluoroscopy was registered. Data analysis was done by using descriptive statistics and T test.
Results: The mean time to perform the procedure was 193.12s (± SE 20.41s); the mean time to use the virtual simulator was 219.36s (±SE 25.96s), and the mean time of fluoroscopy use was 17.19s (± SE 2.56s). Statistically significant differences were found between the first and fourth sessions (p = 0.045). The time to do the procedure and to use the virtual simulator was shortened (p ‹ 0.001).
Conclusions: The use of virtual simulation would be useful for medical training.
