ABSTRACT
The central nervous system is responsible for integrating impulses generated through
the senses, known as sensory integration, a theory proposed by Dr. Ayres in the
seventies. Our sensory experiences and sensory processing begin in the womb and
continue throughout life, with great importance in what happens during early childhood.
Breastfeeding is a behavior with great impact on the health of individuals and
populations, and it is considered as well as a tool that may impact in the proliferation,
differentiation, migration, synaptogenesis and pruning of the nervous system. Different
mechanisms had been described where human milk and breastfeeding impact the
neurocognitive development of the individual. Also, breastfeeding could be affected
in babies with sensory processing difficulties. Timely and adequate support to families
must be given to make informed decisions and provide professional support to solve
difficulties that may arise.
