Lactancia materna como elemento clave para la integración neurosensorial

RESUMEN
El sistema nervioso central es el encargado de integrar impulsos generados a través de
los sentidos y a esto se le conoce como integración sensorial, teoría propuesta por la
Dra. Ayres en los años 70. Nuestras experiencias sensoriales y el procesamiento sensorial
se inician desde el útero y continúan a lo largo de la vida, con gran importancia en lo
que sucede durante la primera infancia. Por otro lado, amamantar no es solamente un
comportamiento con gran impacto en la salud de los individuos y las poblaciones, sino
que también es una herramienta que tiene impacto en la proliferación, diferenciación,
migración, sinaptogénesis y poda del sistema nervioso. Se han descrito mecanismos en
donde la leche humana y el amamantamiento impactan en el desarrollo neurocognitivo
del individuo, así como situaciones en las que alteraciones en el procesamiento
sensorial pueden dificultar el amamantamiento. Es necesario apoyar a las familias a
tomar decisiones informadas además de apoyar de manera profesional para resolver
las dificultades que pudieran presentarse.
