ABSTRACT
Introduction: Several studies indicate the high prevalence of depression in older people at a national and international level. Objective: To evaluate the reliability of the Spanish version of the abbreviated Yesavage questionnaire (GDS-VE) in Cuban older adults.
Methods: From the quantitative approach, a descriptive study was carried out, with a cross-sectional design, in the period from August 2019 to March 2020. The universe consisted of 85 older adults who attend grandparents' homes (number 1, 2 and 3) of the Holguín municipality. Through a probability sampling, 75 were selected. Cognitive functioning, depression and the reliability of the Spanish version of the abbreviated Yesavage questionnaire (GDS-VE) were considered as research variables. The evaluation instruments were the semi-structured interview, the Mini-examination of the Folstein mental state (M.M.S.E), the Katz index, the Lawton scale, the Spanish version of the abbreviated Yesavage questionnaire and the documentary review. The results were processed in the statistical packages Epidat 3.1 and MedCalc.
Results: The correlation coefficient for the test-retest reliability of the Spanish version of the abbreviated Yesavage questionnaire was considerable and significant. Likewise, the general reliability coefficient for the internal consistency of this instrument was good. When calculating the coefficient with the exclusion of each item, it was evidenced that none of them compromised internal consistency.
Conclusions: The reliability of the Spanish version of the abbreviated Yesavage questionnaire in Cuban older adults is good.
