ABSTRACT
Tuberculosis is an infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis, and
it has had a significant impact on the region of Tamaulipas, Mexico. The history of
tuberculosis and its persistence in modern society are highlighted, with an estimated
of 10.6 million cases worldwide in 2021. This text describes the signs and symptoms
of the disease, as well as its various clinical manifestations, including pulmonary and
extrapulmonary tuberculosis. Mexico’s efforts in tuberculosis control are emphasized,
especially through the implementation of the strictly supervised short course treatment,
which has been in place since 1996 and expanded to different states, including Tamaulipas.
Epidemiological information provided by CENAPRECE is presented, highlighting
tuberculosis incidence in Mexico and Tamaulipas, as well as its relatively low mortality
rate compared to other states. This paper reveals data on comorbidities, such as diabetes
mellitus, HIV and excessive alcohol consumption in tuberculosis patients. Migration
is mentioned as a risk factor in tuberculosis transmission in Tamaulipas, and reference
is made to studies exploring tuberculosis in older adults.
