ABSTRACT
Introduction: active research for COVID-19 by medical students has been one of the strategies of the Cuban Ministry of Public Health to combat the pandemic. Objective: to describe the results of the COVID-19 investigation, carried out by medical students at the University of Medical Sciences of Santiago de Cuba.
Methods: cross-sectional descriptive study in 20 medical students from the University of Medical Sciences of Santiago de Cuba, who worked at the “Ramón López Peña” polyclinic in this city from January to April 2021. Variables were used such as: total number of homes searched and closed, total population and vulnerable population searched, respiratory symptoms, fever patients and travelers detected and other sources of information about COVID 19.
Results: the students searched 69.10 % of the homes, 69.60 % of the general population and 53.60 % of the vulnerable population, and educational activities were carried out for 100 % of the searched population. As a result of the investigation, 110 patients with respiratory symptoms, 15 travelers and 36 with fever, were detected during the period. All students stated that they were supported by their teachers and 56.00% by the basic health team.
Conclusions: the active community research work carried out by medical students allowed the detection of people with respiratory symptoms, travelers and febrile cases, as well as appropriate action in the event of violations of health measures incurred in the community.
