ABSTRACT
Introduction: the massive incorporation of students and professors of all careers and years of medical sciences universities to active research work to detect suspicious cases, is a task to confront the COVID-19 pandemic. Objective: to evaluate the results of the active research process regarding COVID-19 carried out by students and professors of medical sciences.
Methods: a qualitative-quantitative investigation was carried out in the population of the health area belonging to the "Rudensindo García del Rijo" Polyclinic, in Sancti Spíritus and in the period between: March 1-April 3/2021. It was developed in three moments: preparation of students and teachers on COVID-19 and evaluation of their knowledge at the end; active research process of the population and evaluation of the population's satisfaction. It worked with all 287 participating researchers. To evaluate the satisfaction of the population, 80 people were selected according to a two-stage sampling. Ethical principles were met.
Results: the largest number of researchers were from the Medicine major (37.28%). A qualitative leap was achieved in the level of knowledge of the students: before, the inadequate one predominated (66.41%) and then, the adequate one (88.28%), with none in the inadequate one. In the stage 385,882 people were investigated, among which 215 (0.56%) were detected with respiratory symptoms. In 49.77% of those detected, the rapid antigen test was positive, but finally, in 24.65%, COVID-19 was diagnosed by PCR, with a predominance in the group of 40 to 59 years (13.02%). The satisfied population prevailed (83.75%) with the research carried out. No illnesses were reported among the researchers.
Conclusions: the researchers of the Medicine career were the most represented. A qualitative leap was achieved in the knowledge of the students after the preparation. 215 with suspicious respiratory symptoms were detected and COVID-19 was promptly diagnosed in 53 of them, especially in the 40 to 59-year-old group. Almost all of the interviewees were satisfied with the research.
