ABSTRACT
Introduction. Quality of life in senior citizens (SCs) is determined by their capacity to maintain their autonomy
and independence. In Mexico, around 67% of SCs suffer from different chronic illnesses; a majority of COVID-19
deaths in 2020 and 2021 occurred in people aged 70 or older.
Objective. To describe the situation of senior
citizens with COVID-19 who received telecare and home care.
Methodology. Quantitative, descriptive, and
longitudinal study of nursing care by a multidisciplinary team, with a convenience sample of 89 participants.
The study was approved by the ethics committee and fulfilled the requirements of ethics codes and informed
consent.
Results. The clinical history of each participant and respiratory triage were carried out in the
first home care session. The impairment of basic activities of daily life was diagnosed, mainly in feeding,
mobility, and bathing. The average duration of care was 14.05 days; the nurses conducted 445 home visits,
267 telephone calls, and 967 video calls during the period of care. 39.32% of participants had to use an
oxygen tank and/or concentrator due to oxygen desaturation, which improved by the end of care. Regarding
interdisciplinary work, a total of 26 referrals were made to specialists on the interdisciplinary team (nutrition,
pulmonology, and geriatrics).
Conclusions. Home care and telecare are strategies that, when used concurrently,
can resolve health problems in vulnerable groups in an epidemiological emergency. Specialists in nursing
were able to reduce respiratory complications, reduce hospitalizations, and control health in comorbidities.
